Determination For Decent Turkey Images

My turkey have returned.  I am feeding them twice day, some days they skip.

I have been playing with my lens, cameras, settings, trying for a sharp, close, decent lighting.  My dream image would a turkey with the tail feathers opened.  I am not happy with my the results using my 2x extender/convertor, using my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L ...my pictures are not sharp. My friend, told me I need  use my tripod and increase the speed. I am still testing my settings, while the pictures are better, not what I was hoping for.

The best part as long as they return, I am having fun playing an learning and taking their images!!!!

Just like my sea gulls, they don't pose for free.  You should have them eating out of your hand by now.  Then you can use your close-up lens.  Great metering BTW.

Ps. I have a turkey costume from VA Tech that you can use, if you think that would help.

That extension tube is making your fast lens a good deal slower.  You might want to up your ISO to allow for a faster shutter speed.  A tripod will help, but will make tracking the birds quite a bit more difficult.  How are you focusing?  If you are using auto focus, you can switch the AF to track a moving target.  I am assuming that your aperture is pretty much wide open, so that will limit your depth of field, making focus very important.  It might even be a good idea to go with manual focus for this so you are sure of what you are getting in focus.  That is my biggest complaint with the 40D.  The AF works well, but it is very hard to tell it what to focus on while working your composition out.  I have found it much easier to just go with manual focus all together.

If you get them with the wings open, I hope you post that photograph! That would be the image to get.  Keep practicing until you get what you want with the camera!
